Google+ Vs. Facebook

YouTube adds Google+ Hangout button, lets you share videos with a click

Hangout video sharing is one of Google+'s more appealing features -- not that we use it often, but when it comes to things to do in an online social gathering, watching YouTube clips would certainly rank near the top. Now you can launch Hangouts directly from YouTube, rather than heading over to Google+ and pasting in a link. Sure, it's a simple tweak that probably took less than an hour to code, but it's a clever addition nonetheless.

Just received invite from an IT guy I'm friends with...he INSISTS it's brilliant...I want to resist as FB became like online crack for me at one point. Arghh, the agony of technology. Watch this space for me to be raving about it in one month's time.

I have forgotten about signing-up already. Never checked-in except to test the site while my buddy (the one that invited me) and I were hanging out one night. He was keen to show me all the features. FB is enough, along w/ Scruff, and Gaire for socializing, thank-you very much.

Google+ gets more sign-language friendly

A video-chat feature called Hangouts is one thing that sets Google+ apart from Facebook and Twitter.
When lots of people are chatting together in a Hangout, only one person "has the floor" at a time -- and you can tell who this person is because their video feed is by far the largest on your computer screen. Until recently, Google's computers used microphone volume to determine who got to be in control of the conversation. So the person yelling the loudest got control of the virtual chat.
One problem: What if you're using sign language?
With no sound input, Google+ didn't know which feed to prioritize. The feature was almost unusable for hearing-impaired people, since the person who had the most background noise in their video usually got the floor.
In a blog post earlier this week, however, Google engineer Chee Chew announced a simple fix.
By hitting shift+s on the keyboard, people using sign language can take control of the conversation.
It's like the digital version of waving for attention.
Everyone on the video chat has to mute their audio to make this feature work, Chew writes.
In the comments on Chew's post, users were excited about the update.
"This is brilliant," wrote a Google+ user named Jeannie June."Thanks a lot for being sensitive to the needs of your users. hits close to home coz my sister is deaf and i love her very much."
"Great idea, Google," wrote Charlie White on the tech blog Mashable, which is a CNN Tech partner site.
Others complained about the video quality on the service, saying it's difficult to see friends clearly.
Chew addressed this issue in his blog post, too.
"We've been aggressively improving the video quality and stability," he wrote. "It's still a huge challenge to transmit 10 video feeds to 10 end points, potentially all around the world. We still have lots of improvements we want to make. But I hope you see a substantial improvement in video stability in the past several weeks. This will be a never-ending effort."

Google Plus Adds Powerful Photo Edit Suite. Free

Google Plus has added Instagram-like controls to its photo section. The service has always had basic editing, and because Google Plus shares its photo albums with Picasa any edits made there would propagate back from there.

But building them in makes things so much easier.

The new controls only work in the desktop version, and is accessed by pressing clicking the edit button when you’re in the full-screen light-box view and selecting “Creative Kit.” You are then launched into an editor which is powered by PicNik.

From here, you can crop and tweak your photos, but you can also apply Instagram-style filters, and perform some pretty powerful edits. The “Sunless Tan” tool, for example, does what it says. You use a brush to apply the tan and it somehow works out where the edges are and turns anyone into a Florida retiree.

Right now there is also a seasonal toolkit: Halloween. This lets you add blood spatter, gravestones, “Dracula Dermis” and other fun nonsense to your pictures.

The Creative Kit uses Flash to do its magic, so even if you manage to sign in to the non-mobile version of Google Plus from an iPad you can’t use it. If any readers have Flash-capable Android tablets, try it out and let us know how it goes. On the other hand, this is good enough to be a Photoshop replacement for many people, and that, combined with speed, may be scary for other sites like the neglected Flickr.

The Creative Kit is available now to Google Plus users.

Press the plus buttons beside the tabs - you can leave just the Primary tab activated.

Will the other mails go into your Primary Tab then?

It's horrible. Gmail always make changes.

I LOVE the new Gmail. When I heard about it, I thought it was such clever idea. People - myself incluced - are lazy when it comes to their social network notifications and promotions from ebay and the like. This new layout sorts out that problem.

Why I really like it is because of the gmail notifications I get on my phone. I haven't gotten any notifications for useless Twitter emails or shite from Amazon for the last couple of days. These always really annoyed me. You see a message coming in on your phone... you get excited, wondering who has emailed you... you see it's just EBay telling you about some new offer.

I have a priority inbox and primary inbox, as well as the promotions and social inbox - i have disabled the promotions and social inbox and i think the primary, however when i go into my inbox (priority) its different to the primary inbox. Bloody annoying.

Composing a new mail, I don't like the pop up box, I prefer the standard way.
