Regarding the Earl of Castlehaven case in 1631 - one word of caution. The son obviously had a vested interest in bringing that case, as did the Earls widow. There also seems to have been witness tampering

Edit: Frances Howard wasn't the widow.

I knew Charles and Vincent Hanley when I lived in Dublin.

From a straight mans point of view I think a turning point in Ireland when it comes to modern gay rights was Steven Gately coming out
That felt like a big turning point when it came to acceptance
