The New Motorways

So you are recomending walking up to a quarter of a kilometer along a motorway to find the nearest sign? Is it even legal to do that? Surely all you need to say is I have passed the turn-off to "where-ever" or past junction X and the rescue services will find you. It is not as if they can reach you any other way than from the last junction you passed.

Well I find motorway driving very boring and I rarely pay attention to what was the last junction I passed as it all looks the same on motorways

I see the first Burger King in County Tipperary has opened as part of the new Applegreen services at Birdhill just off the M7 Dublin to Limerick motorway. How have Gaireans found these motorway services? Useful or just meh? Are there enough of them?

Meanwhile, construction has begun on the M17/M18 Gort to Tuam motorway in Galway and progresses nicely on the M11 which will close the gap in motorway between Dublin and Gorey.

The transformation of our road network into motorways in recent years has shaved off journey times considerably. It is one of the things the government did right during the Celtic Tiger years - indeed it's the one thing we've got to show from that period. The major routes are, most importantly, much safer now thanks to the motorways preventing head on collisions that were a feature of the old single carriageway routes.

The new Newlands Cross N7 flyover is due to open to traffic this coming Thursday. Once open it means that were will be a route with no traffic lights all the way from Belfast to Cork.

Couldn't be more delighted. Newlands Cross was really the 'weakest link' in our motorway/national road network. I was seriously considering shelling out on a train ticket for the Christmas trip home but I won't have to if this does the job it is supposed to.

Construction work on the M17/M18 Gort to Tuam motorway is proceeding well. Hundreds of tonnes of solid rock are being hewn out of the landscape to make way for the new motorway. The complex whirlpool interchange with the existing M6 motorway will be a major feature of the scheme.

...so the Saw Doctors will have to write a new song for the M17.

Another motorway services has opened - this time on the M9 motorway at Paulstown, Kilkenny. It has an Applegreen service station, a Costa Coffee outlet and a Burger King.

Handy if you're travelling from Dublin to Waterford.

Tuam isnt exactly my scene.

Extraordinary how there is a motorway from Limerick to Tuam but a twisty, clogged single carriageway from Limerick to Cork.
