# 1 : Wednesday 19-12-2012 @ 14:09

Any recommendations for a nice wine or champagne to buy the mother and sister in law for Christmas that would be available to purchase in one of the major supermarkets ?

Thanks in advance

If you want to get something that's special, tastes divine and not too expensive get a Lebanese Shiraz for about 22 euro, you might have to go to a wine shop though. Failing that you can't go wrong with a Chianti or considering the season, a good Prosecco.

I'm a big fan of Domaine Sautereau Sancerre. It's a lovely crisp white. Very easy to drink.

Average price is about €18 - €24.

It's always a great one for a gift 19%. It looks, smells and drinks like a far more expensive wine.
Brilliant one to bring to a dinner party

First you should decide whether the wine you want is red or white. Find out which one they prefer.

If white, decide whether you want still or sparkling. Sparkling is good for opening in a special occasion like New Year. As some people said, spend €20 on a bottle of prosecco (sparkling white) and you are unlikely to go wrong.

In whites, if you are unsure what to go for, a New Zealand Savignon Blanc is probably a safe bet. Spend €15.

In reds, a €15 Italian red is probably going to be quite good. Elat recommends a Chianti. I would go for a Montepulciano. Either way, A mid-price Italian is always a good bet.

Buy in Lidl, Superquinn or O'Briens. Tesco's selection is not great at the moment and I'm not a fan of Dunnes (especially their reds) lately either.

I'm told SuperValu are good to shop in but I haven't been in one in a while.

Lidl or Superquinn sounds handy for me.

Presseco or Aldi's Cremant De Jura for a tenner is a safe bet for white fizz, unless you care more about image than taste,in which case a shampers at four times the price should suffice.

Do you think Wine, would make better anti-freeze?
