Galaxy S4 launch: Samsung brings fight to Apple

Samsung will unwrap its latest blockbuster smartphone, the Galaxy S4, at the Radio City music hall in New York on Thursday evening as the South Korean phonemaker tries to bring the fight to Apple's home market.

With Samsung rumoured to have ordered a production run of 100m handsets and research firm Strategy Analytics predicting the S4 will ship 60m units by Christmas, Seoul is going head to head with Silicon Valley for dominance of smartphone sales.

The Guardian will be reporting live from the unveiling of Samsung's most hyped handset yet when proceedings begin at 11pm GMT (7pm EST). Expected big features include wireless charging to a screen controlled not just by touch but by eye movements.

The Galaxy S4 should outdo the latest iPhone in areas such as photography and processing power, if the leaks are correct, but will still lag behind Apple on the quality of materials and the selection of apps available to the Google Android operating system it uses.

Every leaked screenshot so far suggests Samsung will retain the Galaxy's shiny plastic case, leaving Apple, which prefers aluminium, steel and glass, in its own category when it comes to external appearances.

Any android users looking forward to this? The leaked shot above (if legit) doesn't look all that different but I believe the screen is marginally bigger. Its rumoured to have some kind of eye scroll technology that lets you browse pages without using your fingers.

I tried an android tablet a few months ago but I didn't like the OS so I don't see myself switching from iOS just yet.

Looks awful. I really dont like the plasticy nature of the S3 and now the S4. I'll stick with the S2 for now.

It is a bit bland alright. If it was made of glass and metal it would surely weigh a ton given it's size.

Would that be a problem? I prefer heavier devices.

For me definitely, I find my 4s is a bit too heavy. The 5 is the right direction weight-wise.

I'm still with my S2. My Samsung Apps crash loads. It's alright but I just want to fuck it at the wall sometimes.

I know I've been saying it since I lost my Iphone 3S but one day again I will be an Iphone Boy in an Iphone world, life with an Iphone, it's fantastic.

It's launched

Samsung said the Galaxy S4 will sport a bigger 5-inch display than the S3's 4.8 inches. But because the new display will cover more of the phone's surface area, the device itself will be the same length and slightly narrower, thinner and lighter than the previous generation.

The newest features involve different options for navigation. For example, if the phone senses someone is looking at the screen, the user can tilt it forward or backwards to scroll up and down a Web page.

That feature falls slightly short of what some consumers may have expected after the New York Times reported that the phone would be able to scroll automatically by tracking readers' eyes.

But what it can do is sense when it has someone's attention. When a video is playing, for instance, the stream will automatically pause if the person glances away and it will restart when the eyes refocus on the screen.

This is an update on an existing Galaxy S III feature which allows the screen to sense whether or not the user is looking at. If there is nobody looking at the S III, the screen's light switches off automatically to conserve battery power.

The latest phone also has a sensor that lets users move their hands to the left or right to scroll between different websites they have opened or through songs or photos in an album without having to touch the phone.

The idea is to make it easier to change the song playing without having to pick up the phone while driving or to avoid putting sticky fingers on the touch-screen display while scrolling through a Web page at mealtimes.

The phone will also allow users to hover a finger over an email inbox or a photo gallery to get a glimpse of more details of what's in the email or which photos are in an album.

Another feature includes the option to automatically put a copy of details from a photograph of a business card into the phone's contacts database or call a number in the business card.

Samsung is also promising an instant translation between 10 different languages for certain applications, as well as a separate translation application on the device.

The device also has a 13 megapixel camera, compared with the S 3's 8-megapixel

It looks nearly identical! I guess the same could be said for the iPhone 4 and 5. These new features sound a bit gimmicky.

I agree. They're trying to make the whole thing sound more wholesome and life-enhancing.

I'm thinking of getting an S3 now. I dont want to move from Samsung because the screens are so good. And there's no way I'd ever own an iPhone.

After seeing all the android phones at the meet it is taking Herculean efforts to suppress my need to get an S4. Silly really when the S5 is a couple of months away.
