I have moved a lot.
So if by local you mean the village I was born in, it is a defo no, no and no again. (To give context, the left-wing activist and gay-right campaigner who was killed in France last week was (allegedly) murdered by a local of my father's home town.)
I have found out when I was a kid that when I was coming back from 3 years away from my birth town and back, they had not changed/evolved one bit. Not one bit. They were set in their ways.
Technically I am wed to a local.
He is local to me (we live in the same house!) and he is local to the general vicinity (he was born in the extended area and works in the village he was born in).
To answer your question in a context more relevant to you, I would second the "don't mess local, but don't hesitate to be serious locally". That s what your brother meant by not shitting on your doorstep.
At the same time, I would not grant a premium to shopping local, unless you feel part of a local community that you want to stay in and reproduce as it is.
