Turkey In Turmoil

The following is taken from Iranian atheist/agnostic movement FaceBook page (a great page) its a good summery of whats been happening in Turkey.

Turkey:
So, what's going on in Turkey right now? You may or may not remember the events took place during last summer; The government ordered the police to attack the protesters violently who were practically just sitting around by a park. That was their protest against the destruction of the only green place left amidst the city and the government wouldn't take it.

Because the police was unnecessarily harsh, it all provoked a movement against the dictatorship of the government. During this ordeal, one boy, of age 15 called Berkin ELVAN was shot in the head by a pepper gas capsule. He was just out to buy some bread and he had told his mother: "Mum, there's a ruckus outside. You cannot run away from the pepper gas, but I can. Lemme go out and get stuff instead."

Well, that was the last time he went out. After being shot in the head with the capsule he went into a coma which he would stay in for 269 days. His weight reduced to a mere 16 kilograms from 45 before he lost his battle and passed away 2 days ago.

Now obviously the people were angry about this. A child who was innocent had died because the government was too cocky to let people protest them in peace. They consider themselves to be a sultanate of sorts despite the fact this country's ruled with Democracy.

Two days ago, people wished to express their anger about the horrid ways of the government, and the child who died for it. The results have been, and still are ridiculous. 3 people died only last night trying only to express how they were fed up with the government.

Yes, they seem about ready to join the EU....

It's ridiculous this sort of thing still goes on anywhere in the world, let alone in a (slightly) European country.

I once watched a documentary on Turkey, mostly focused on official government celebrations, it was kinda scary, like a Turkish version of a Nazi rally, those guys are nuts.

They're not a democracy, nowhere near a democracy.

Sure just look at the riots in England a couple of years ago.
That was started after the shooting of a man by police, even though the riot itself was more about arson and robbing shoes.
I wonder if it could ever happen here?

There was a minor riot on O'Connel St not that long ago, I think it was about allowing the Orange Order to march in Dublin or something like that.

That was the 'Love Ulster' crowd (so maybe all the skangers thought it was something to do with the Love Parade Berlin )

Glibness over I seem to recall a heavily pregnant woman was punched in the stomach by one of the fine upstanding individuals involved apart from the usual looting of sports shops which happens any time there's a riot in Ireland or the UK.

I was in Istanbul last Summer and you would never know there was any unrest. The riots were pretty much over at that stage but we were advised not to go to Taksim Square area.

I am increasingly convinced we are headed to total global destruction. I try and push it out of my mind but then this shit keeps happening. Its a coup in a NATO member! Boarding on ISIS territory, and iran and russia and they have beef with them all. Not to mention Trump et al

Come on now. It's not like Turkey is unfamiliar with a coup. It's just been a while.

Erdogan had it coming. He was getting far too authoritarian, not to mention the dubious relationship with DAESH, and playing chicken with Russia. I note the rest of NATO are very quiet tonight.

Another coup, are they trying to enter the Guinness book of records or the EU?

I think the coup is over. Civilians rounded up the military.
The Irish army would make a better coup attempt than that
