Whaling? What's The Problem?

# 1 : Thursday 27-11-2014 @ 19:46

Japan has stated that it is to resume whaling in the southern ocean with a reduced target of 333 Minke whales instead of previous quotas of 900. As expected most countries are in uproar while the international court has deemed the hunts illegal.

But what's the problem with sustainable hunting of whales? Why is the west so disgusted by the hunting of whales but most other species it's perfectly fine to hunt. Is it a case of the west dominating what is and what isn't okay to consume or Eco imperialism as the Japanese put it or is it that whaling is just not necessary in the 21st century?

Whales are cute and warm blooded furry mammals. But so are cattle.

Why shouldn't they be hunted? Simple answer. They're endangered.

Minke whales are not endangered. Their population is considered healthy.

One of the only few types of whale not. But that's not to say that preservation should be key in order to keep out that way, as the article states:

However, there has been an appreciable decline in their estimated abundance

A decline but still healthy. That reasoning suggests cod fishing should be illegal.

In my own opinion whaling is cruel and unnecessary.

Easier to farm and control cod than whales.
