Migration To The European Union - What To Do?

# 1 : Wednesday 5-8-2015 @ 21:15

Given the rescue today by the Irish naval vessel LE Niamh of a capsized boat packed with economic migrants from Africa to the EU in the Mediterranean, what is to be done by the growing tide of people coming from abject poverty to wealthy Europe?

Does the EU have a collective responsibility to accommodate them or will they swamp our societies and create racial/cultural tensions?

What do Gaireans think of this very important issue?

They should be sent to Camden town London, lots of room for them there. Maybe if there was less inequality in their countries of origin, and the gangs of Tripoli were exterminated, that would be a good start.

The EU needs to follow the money and crack down on this Ermias Ghermay guy who seems to be the leading trafficker. These traffickerss are not some angels helping migrants find a better life. Sky News had a feature on his gang recently and showed his holding centres where migrants in Libya are locked up while other family members are forced to pay €5000 for their release. When the EU rescues the from the Mediterranean and brings them to the EU, folks like Ermias can feel "mission accomplished".

Also by African standards €5000 takes decades to earn so its hard to believe these are the lower classes migrating. More likely its the better off ones, which somewhat undermines the redistribution argument of the Left.

Ridiculous carry on. Turn them back. 60 million spent on foreign aid a year and now this and we can't even look after our own.

What a stupid comment! Reminds me of something my grandad said about 30 years ago. 4 million refugees in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon and the west whinge and propagandise a couple of tens of thousand refugees trying to get into 27 countries as the result of wars that the west created.

I think the Refugee Convention needs to be amended to take account of the revolution in ease of travel since 1951. It was much harder to travel around the world back then.

The West needs to end discriminatory trade policies like tariffs that keep Africa poor, and put pressure on Israel to end the Occupation. Apparently a girl rescued by the Irish Navy was Palestinian. On ISIS NATO needs to bomb them to smithereens but also impose a ceasefire afterwards so Assad cannot fill the void.

It's important not to create pull factors.

I call total bullcrap on this. It actually makes me so fucking angry that I can't even come up with a proper response. Downgrading the status of refugees just because it is supposedly easier to travel would be a vile attack on human rights. And it doesn't even apply to migrants crossing the water from Libya as they are travelling on boats that could be as old as the refugee convention, they certainly wouldn't be any better than what was available in 1951.

The only way we will ever stop this is if the west stops being so fucking selfish and shares its wealth with rest of the world. Someone mentioned something about €60m in aid as if that was actually a big amount, its a fucking pittance.

Its so easy for us, sitting in our houses that aren't in any danger of being blown up to say 'oh leave them to drown, send them all back, we give enough'. If we gave enough, migrants wouldn't need to come here. And what we do give is mostly swallowed up by dictators and civil servants who are paid by western governments and companies so that they are allowed to continue pillaging poorer regions of the earth for every last bit of oil, copper or whatever natural resources they have.

If anywhere should be bombed to smithereens, it should be the west.

Heaven forbid the possibility we would end the inhumanity of direct provision and 19 measly euro a week.

Heaven forbid we let a few non Europeans in

Has trekking across the Sahara got easier since 1951? Well that's good to know.

Rescuing these people is a good thing. However, they should be delivered back to wherever they left from. Bringing them to Europe is only encouraging more of them to set sail from wherever. We cannot look after out own people here, never mind taking in more immigrants. There is no future for them here. Let them sort out the problems in their own countries.

The banks robbed people of billions and some of you are worried a couple of thousand refugees will be more than we can handle?

Give me a break! Be racist if you like but don't rationalise it!
