Good article from Keegan Hirst's wife on her struggle with her marriage ending

God, what an arsehole! I find it annoying that he is being held up as some kind of hero when he did that to another person.

This is another example that it's not just gay people that can be victims of homophobia.

Straight people have been subjected to marriages and relationships with people who would have identified as gay, to themselves, much earlier in their lives if it wasn't for the cultural homophobia. Of course, orientations can change. I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed in that case.

People's perceptions of their own orientation at least can. "Lying to yourself" etc.

Yes, I've dabbled in lesbianism and homo-bisexuality when the mood takes me. Nothing is set in stone, not even stone.

Lie about his orientation, get involved with a woman thinking he'd be able to surpress his orientation.

Perhaps Penny can tell us what he should have done instead.

Yeah, it's just.
It appears as if Penny is calling someone an arsehole, for not being able to time travel.

It's one thing, people entering into false marriages to hide who they are, it's entirely another, finding out who you are after the dust has settled and being brave enough to do the right thing and tell your partner.

If this were another time, or culture, I (or any one of us) could have easily been married off to someone before we've ever had the luxury of exploring our secuality.

And considering I know some folk who literally had to face facts 5,10,20 years into a marriage, with children, before discovering who they really were. The idea of calling someone an asshole for doing the brave thing, sounds wrong.

I agree, instinctively. But I there's a spectrum of arsehole-ness. Some worse than others. And some who were helpless to know how things were going to turn out. Not all of these people are necessarily bad people who want to hurt a wife/partner who fell for them.

I think it's pretty shitty to marry someone, have a kid with them even when you know your heart is not in it. One thing to be in the closet, but to drag someone else into it is inexcusable.

"knowing in your heart" is subjective though. What if he didn't know in his heart?

You're not allowing for the fact that the human mind is a very good at convincing itself of things that aren't true.
what's more you're saying self realization is "not allowed" once you've made a commitment in ignorance.

That's one end of the spectrum. I know several people on this very website that didn't know they would turn out to be gay when they married their partner. They just sort of didn't enjoy the sexual part of their marriage that much but assumed that it was the same for many people in marriages.

What are people like that supposed to do? Is that inexcusable?
