Pope Francis To Visit Ireland In 2018

# 1 : Monday 28-11-2016 @ 13:28

So apparently after a 23 minute meeting between Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Pope Francis I in Rome, and at the request of the Irish Catholic hierarchy, Il Papa is scheduled to visit Ireland in August 2018.

The last Papal visit was in 1979 by then Pope John Paul II. It attracted millions - half the country's population was at the Phoenix Park and I was there too, as a little lad approaching my 5th birthday. I do remember it!

Ireland has gone through profound social change since then - particularly during the 1990s and early 2000s. The Church is a much diminished force in this country and that's largely for the better IMO. But there are still many devout Catholics here and I'm sure they will be out in force to see the Pope in 2 years time.

Would you welcome the Pope's visit? Should he publicly apologise for the wrongs done by the Church in Ireland? Would you go to see him? Discuss...

All the boys and girls will be called Francis that year. Double whammy with it being male and female. Scaldy name and just as bad as the John Pauls.

I think it's a great idea how else could we arrest or at least detain and question him as the leader of an institution involved in the cover-up of child sex abuse. Good plan Enad.
As usual Stephen Fry says it better than I could.

I'm sure people will make a big fuss. This pope is very popular after all. But it won't be anywhere near the levels of 1979.

Sadly Jerryp I don't think we ever get close enough there would be too many people in our way kissing his ring, and I don't just mean the one on his finger.

As the head of a Foreign State (The Vatican) he would have Diplomatic Immunity and be entitled to exercise this if any attempt were made to arrest him. Besides, he himself did not carry out any of the offences here and he was not in charge when these offences occurred.

A lot of anger expressed by posters over on boards.ie over this planned visit. I think we can definitely expect numerous protests.

Most people not yet born in 1979 will be completely indifferent to the whole thing. But a few have opined that this Papal visit will be timed to coincide with the Referendum on repealing the 8th Amendment. If that is what the church is planning for, it will backfire. Irish people aren't afraid of the church any more and will make their own minds up.

I'm indifferent to this planned visit. I won't go to see Pope Francis but if there had been a Papal visit in, say, 1999 I would have been out protesting. The revelations of clerical child sex abuse sickened me. In retrospect, the church were wise not to have invited the Pope over back then. The anger and revulsion was palpable.

In fairness, the event he's coming to is in August 2018. We can have the referendum in May, heck, even May 2017, and make sure there is no coincidence. But that's our call.

He has super powers too, he'll fly down from the rooftop at the opening ceremony and they've built a light that beckons him to SOS.
