"There's such a legacy and a history here so it really does feel like the end of an era."

It's a pub for f**k sake?

It was a regular haunt for the Dublin Bears so yes it is the end of an era for some of it's patrons.

I'm sad to see it go - it was a great little pub.

I know it sounds like such an old fogey thing to say but most other pubs - especially the gay ones - are just too damn loud.

That's my favorite place to be in Dublin, fucking sold down the river for a few bucks.
I remember the staff there, I remember always loving going in for a pint.

It was also one of the first places I ever went to I ever went out as a gay person; the upstairs for a gaire meet. I remember Column kindly volunteering to meet me and some other new gairians in Pantibar an hour before the main meet upstairs in Nealons.
And I remember judging (pantibar) to be garish and brash and not for me.

and then Nealons... quite pints, sound people, calm decor, Staff well presented, genuine and chattable.
And later that year I went to the Dublin bears meet too, and met some of the nicest folk I've ever met.

I remember thinking Nealons was my "spiritual home" in Dublin, and I would always be up for trekking up/in to Dublin for adventures , or for a gay night out in "pantibar" knowing Nealons is there I could always nip across the road for one to chill and be myself for 15 minutes and recharge (both spiritually, and also sometimes literally, i.e., phone and ipod batteries).

Well said Greenmanpp.

The staff were always super friendly and upstairs with those long windows looked kinda magical on a cold winter night.

Is it a gaire curse? We hold a meet, it changes within two years?

Ah Nealons survived a fair few meets before succumbing.

That's the go to bar for my first dates gone then. That and the front lounge were the only gay bars you could have a proper conversation in and now both are gone.

The new place Street 66 is actually far nicer and the clientele are predominantly gay.
